Can I Change The Switch+Socket In A Pole Lamp?

By "floor lamp" I mean a floor lamp that has multiple bulb housings (usually three) attached to the sides of the column - no light on top. With a pole lamp, both of these things are impossible: the base of the lamp housing is stamped or welded onto the column, and the wire makes a 90 degree turn where it leaves the column, so it is impossible to pull.
