Caroline contacted Dr. Joanna Christou of The Cosmetic Skin Clinic, who is an expert in creating a signature natural look for her patients with facelifts. Dr. Joanna helps explain why thread lift treatments have rightly won "a fan base among people looking for subtle, scalpel-free contouring."

How did lift wires become popular? From simple beginnings of concealed tape to achieve that “instant face lift”, threads have evolved into the most modern and sophisticated treatment. "Pioneering in the 1980s with fine gold fibers, lifting threads now use a biodegradable material similar to surgical stitches, sewing through the layer of fat just below the surface of the skin and tightening where there is a slump."

Who needs lift wires? The ideal candidate for a thread lift is anyone who is not ready for surgery but can see:

As we age, the fat below the surface can begin to slip away, giving the face a heavier, saggy appearance. They also stimulate two types of collagen – type 1, which keeps the skin looking youthful, and type 3, which is more like scar tissue, meaning it's tougher.

Polydioxanone threads have "barbs instead of cones to do the lifting work and create new type 3 collagen."

Dr. Joanna Christou, aesthetic doctor at The Cosmetic Skin Clinic points out that during your consultation "your doctor will advise you, but in general, AOP threads can be more suitable for areas like the eyes because they create a support in mesh shape for frizzy skin. All that will be needed may be "a few dots of local anesthetic or numbing cream". Some treatments are called midday treatments, but facelifts are not, although they can be done in less than 30 minutes. Dr. Joanna says that "after the facelift is complete, you can refine the overall appearance with fillers or treatments such as Profhilo to improve skin quality."

What do most thread lift patients get after a thread lift? Dr. Joanna backs up that statement, saying, "It's an investment in prevention." Patients who receive facelifts starting in their mid-40s can start working on your facial structure proactively. Since you won't have aged the same way, facelifts can help delay or even prevent the need for surgery later.
